Description
Rare and elusive, this set of six Robert Dunlop Dining chairs is a coveted find. Hailing from Dunlop’s esteemed Studio Line, these chairs were meticulously crafted in his workshop located in Stafford, Brisbane. Notably, they were designed in collaboration with the renowned Danish designer, Tom Larsen.
The exceptional design and craftsmanship of Dunlop’s furniture contributed to its widespread acclaim during his time. By the 1970s, Dunlop’s reputation solidified, leading to prestigious commissions for the design of furniture in prominent Australian institutions such as Parliament House and the High Court in Canberra. By the early 1980s, Dunlop’s creations were being sold in 19 countries worldwide, a remarkable feat for Australian-made furniture.
Dunlop’s success can be attributed to his seamless fusion of Australian bush furniture with modernist design influences from Europe. His innovative use of materials, such as Radiata Pine and anodized aluminum tubing, set his work apart and continues to stand out compared to contemporary offerings. The intriguing combination of timber and metal in his furniture has a timeless appeal.
The recognition of Dunlop’s achievements came posthumously, with his induction into the Design Institute of Australia’s Design Hall of Fame in October 2015. Despite the delayed acknowledgment, his exceptional work spans multiple eras and deserved earlier recognition.
Today, Dunlop’s pieces are increasingly rare and highly sought after. Dealers and experts predict that the value of his work will continue to rise in the coming years, adding an investment appeal to their inherent aesthetic and functional qualities.
