Fler Furniture, established in 1946 by immigrants Fred Lowen and Ernest Rodeck in Melbourne, Australia, played a transformative role in defining the nation’s mid-century modern design. Starting in a humble two-horse stable, the company—named after its founders’ initials—evolved from producing wooden tableware and propelling pencils to crafting iconic furniture that fused Scandinavian-inspired aesthetics with Australian timbers. Encouraged by designer Frederick Ward, Fler’s early “Swedish Modern Dining Chair” (DC1) paved the way for celebrated designs like the SC55 armchair and Narvik range, embodying the Scandi-Pacific style. By the 1960s, Fler had expanded across Australia, became the first Australian furniture company listed on the stock exchange, and showcased its work at the 1967 Montreal Expo. Despite its acquisition by Australian Controls in 1966 and later challenges from cheaper imports, Fler’s legacy lives on through its timeless, expertly crafted pieces, prized by collectors and design aficionados for their modernist elegance.
